The Indonesian industry sector, emitting 238.05 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) in 2022, poses a challenge to achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2050.
The government plans to increase the adaptation of renewable energy, including through utilizing solar power plants.
In line with these government goals, HKI and ESI have partnered to introduce the Energy Community concept, a solar energy innovation, leveraging global practices to integrate renewable energy usage of companies within an Electricity Business Area (Wilus), formalized with an MoU signing on 25 July 2024.

Semarang, July 25, 2024 — Indonesian industry sector, which emitted 238.05 million tons of C02e in 2022, still poses significant challenges to enhance renewable energy adoption, including technological limitations, specialized knowledge shortage, and insufficient resources. To overcome these challenges, Himpunan Kawasan Industri Indonesia (HKI) has partnered with PT Emerging Solar Indonesia (ESI) through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in Semarang on July 25, 2024, during the XXIV HKI National Working Meeting (Rakernas).
The partnership aims to bring ESI's globally proven advanced practices and technology to the country to promote the use of green energy, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of Indonesian industry. ESI, an Indonesian renewable energy company founded on global financial, technological, and intellectual capital, combines global expertise with local understanding to offer renewable investments.
Strengthening the competitiveness of the Indonesian industry sector through more sustainable operations aligns with the government's goals. “Industrial estates must immediately transform into fourth-generation industrial estates that integrate environmentally conscious technology,” said Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita at the opening of the National Working Meeting. “We hope that this transformation will impact the increased competitive performance of industrial estates, leading to economic growth.”

Harry Radcliffe, Director of ESI, emphasized the company’s mission, “ESI is excited that our partnership with HKI will enable the association’s members to gain access to renewable energy for a more sustainable future. They will not only benefit from reducing their carbon footprint but also increasing their investment competitiveness.”
Through this partnership, ESI is dedicated to advancing the Indonesian government’s agenda for increasing renewable energy adoption in industrial estates. One of the key initiatives is the introduction of the Energy Community concept, an innovative energy-sharing scheme successfully implemented by ESI’s parent company, Greenvolt Group, in Portugal. This innovative scheme allows companies within an Electricity Business Area (Wilus) to benefit from the results of energy-sharing from more integrated renewable energy sources.
HKI further elaborated that ESI’s goals in Indonesia closely align with the government plans to increase the adaptation of renewable energy, including through the construction of solar power plants. Sanny Iskandar, Chairman of HKI, expressed confidence in this collaboration with ESI, ”Collaboration with ESI will be a game-changer for Indonesian industry. By combining our resources and expertise, we can create a more sustainable future for the Indonesian industry sector while supporting the government’s ambitious Net Zero Emissions goal through maximizing renewable energy.”

About Himpunan Kawasan Industri (HKI)
Industrial Estates Association of Indonesia or Himpunan Kawasan Industri Indonesia (HKI) was established on 20th of June 1988 as the association of companies engaging in the development and management of industrial estates in Indonesia. The objective of HKI is to strengthen the roles of industrial estates as a tool for industrialization by encouraging the members to provide well planned and developed industrial land with all necessary infrastructure and supporting services to the manufacturing industry. Therefore the industrial estates are acting as a non-fiscal incentive to foreign as well as domestic direct investment in the manufacturing sector. Not only by providing ready to build land lots and standard factory buildings, but also by assisting and servicing the process of obtaining permits, land titles, power, water, telephones, wastewater treatment, etc.; and more importantly a continuous management of the estates.
